China, Qing dynasty, 18th/19th c.

Silk satin (dark blue), embroidery: silk (numerous colors), satin stitch. Faces glued on, from finely painted silk satin, beards partly with long hair. Lining, later added: blue silk. Machine sewn. The hanging consists of an embroidered frame. In the upper part central the Queen Mother of the West Xiwangmu surrounded by immortals, deer, cranes and pine trees. In the two side panels are shown the 'Eight Immortals'. In the lower part, which is now sewn to the back of the upper part, a palace in the waves with deer, flying cranes and a landscape. Peaches of immortality are scattered throughout the illustration. The faces are particularly elaborately made of the finest painted silk satin. The embroidery is very high quality and with amazing details.
